With impressive images and poignant personal stories, this documentary follows women in Rojava, an autonomous region in northern Syria. Despite ongoing conflicts, deeply rooted patriarchal structures and political repression, they are committed to living a self-determined life – in everyday life, in cooperatives, in fields and in classrooms. Whether it’s Sidan, who juggles several jobs as an English teacher, or Jehan, who passes on her craft skills and creates spaces for community, they all embody quiet but determined resistance to oppression. Director Robert Krieg captures moments of survival, solidarity and hope, telling the story of a social transformation that is taking place away from the world’s attention – driven by women who are taking the initiative themselves.
