Hasan Oswald is an award‑winning documentary filmmaker known for his powerful, vérité storytelling and deep engagement with human rights issues. Based in the United States, Oswald began his filmmaking career working on projects covering social crises and global inequalities, including reporting on the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and the refugee diaspora in the Middle East for major outlets such as National Geographic.
His feature directorial debut, Higher Love (2020), won the Grand Jury Award at the Slamdance Film Festival and established Oswald as a compelling voice in documentary cinema. He continued this work with Mediha (2023), which premiered at DOC NYC and won the Grand Jury Prize, following the journey of a young Yazidi survivor of ISIS captivity as she documents her own recovery and search for her missing family.
Oswald’s films are marked by their intimate access and empathetic approach, giving agency to subjects whose stories might otherwise go unheard. Through collaboration and immersive filmmaking, he highlights resilience amid trauma and the ongoing struggles for justice and dignity across communities affected by conflict and systemic neglect.
